Demographics
Home to just over 85,000 people, Ozaukee County occupies 25 miles of Lake Michigan waterfront. The area was originally settled for its rich limestone quarries and harbor access to the lake, but today most local trade comes in the form of tourism. Many towns in Ozaukee County also serve as suburban communities for those who work in greater Milwaukee; people live here for the relative safety and quiet but commute to jobs in the city. According to 1998 census estimates, Ozaukee County was the 20th richest county in the United States.
Belgium (?The Village with a Heart?)
The bright green hearts seen above Belgium?s welcome signs symbolize the community?s Luxembourg heritage (The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is known as the ?Green Heart of Europe? and the province of Luxembourg exits in the country of Belgium). While the first immigrants came from Luxembourg, neighboring settlers referred to this as ?the Belgium area? because at that time much of Luxembourg was ruled by Belgium. The current residents still celebrate their heritage throughout the year.
The people of Belgium, Wisconsin invite you to share a unique combination: Old world charm and the natural scenic beauty of rolling terrain to the shore of Lake Michigan. At the turn of the century, limestone was quarried on the site presently occupied by Harrington Beach State Park. A whole company town existed along the shore of Lake Michigan; several of the company houses were moved west to the Village of Belgium and can be seen here today. The old quarry is now a beautiful lake, where hikers often enjoy the nature trail that circles it. The park also offers lakeside beaches, picnic areas, and a winding road through the woods for cyclists. Harrington Beach State Park is a wildlife preserve too, and offers a protected habitat for many species. Deer dwell in these woods, where they can sometimes be seen quietly browsing for food or gracefully leaping across its fields.
Belgic Luxembourgers - from the part of old Luxembourg annexed by Belgium - settled in the area of the present Township and Village of Belgium, Wisconsin in the middle of the 19th century. Descendants of the original families still live here today and work to preserve their heritage.
Fredonia
Home to over 2,200 people, the village of Fredonia lies between Hwy. 57 and the Milwaukee River on County Hwy. H. Nestled within its rolling hills are buildings with a variety of architecture, dating from the 1800s to the present.
The seeds of the village were planted in 1872, when the area was donated by Peter Martin and Peter Paulus to the Milwaukee and Northern Railway Corporation as a depot. The name Fredonia, which means "free gifts" or "the land where things are done freely," was chosen. Today, Fredonia is a thriving community sporting an industrial park, a fine school system, new home developments, and the rural charm that so many area residents move here to enjoy.
Just west of Fredonia is Waubeka; the town is home to the National Flag Day Foundation Americanism Center, which is housed in a 13,000 square foot building that sits on fifteen acres of land. The center offers the Avenue of Flags (displaying all 27 star configurations of The American Flag), a commemorative outdoor courtyard, and a full museum featuring military and local memorabilia. Open on the third Sunday of each month from 1-4 p.m. or by appointment, the museum includes a room devoted to Bernard J. Cigrand, the Father of Flag Day.
Residents of the Fredonia-Waubeka area enjoy access to many attractions, nature trails, and wonderful parks. Kettle Moraine State Forest offers camping and sightseeing, while the Chief Waubeka Trail provides an excellent place for biking and hiking. Your New Homes Realty Buyer?s Agent looks forward to helping you find your dream home in this part of Wisconsin!
