Demographics

Ranking second in Inc.com?s just released ?Boomtowns ?06: Hottest Midsize Cities? list, the McAllen-Edinburg, Texas area has experienced a 22.3% growth in jobs during the last five years. The economic picture of this area is bright, with the services, wholesale and retail trade, and educational sectors in the forefront. This year?s survey appears to have uncovered an important economic trend - an increasing number of small-to-midsize communities are emerging as influential business centers across the country. With a population approaching 120,000, the city is situated along the southern tip of Texas in one of the fastest-growing metropolitan areas in the state. While McAllen is considered an entrepreneurial hotbed, it also boasts a sub-tropical setting, friendly residents, and a down-home, relaxed atmosphere that offers an outstanding quality of life. Known as the ?City of Palms,? for the ubiquitous swaying palm trees dotting its desert landscape, McAllen is located in the Rio Grande Valley just 10 minutes north of the Mexican border, the Rio Grande River.

Recreation and Sports

A gateway to Mexico and the other countries of Central America, McAllen offers a rich variety of multicultural and outdoor recreational opportunities. The city is one of the most highly desirable spots for year-round bird watching in the country due to its favorable position on the migratory path between North and South America. The scenic area is in proximity to many beautiful parks including Anzalduas Park, Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, and Bentsen Rio Grande State Park. Fishing, boating, swimming, hiking, scuba diving, dolphin-watching, and fun in the sun on the nearby beaches of South Padre Island ? it?s all here in and around McAllen.

Art and Culture

The McAllen Chamber of Commerce recently developed an annual ?Cultural Arts and Entertainment Series? that explores the blend of cultures in its community. A variety of mini-classes in subjects such as salsa, cha cha, jewelry making, and mosaics are provided free-of-charge to students. The Square Dance Capital of the World in McAllen offers year-round music, dancing, special events, and dance instructions. There are also many interesting historical sites and museums in the area including the Museum of South Texas History, International Museum of Art and Science, Virgen de San Juan del Valle Shrine, La Lomita Mission, Shary Estate, and the Los Ebanos Ferry, the only remaining hand-drawn ferry that travels across the Rio Grande.

Dining, Entertainment, and Shopping

The city is the retail hub of South Texas and northern Mexico, serving over 10 million people within a 200-mile radius. McAllen?s popular 1.2 million square-foot shoppertainment center, La Plaza Mall, is actually walking distance from the airport. Downtown McAllen, with its array of unique boutiques, also hosts events all year long. From the ?Street Market? on the first Sunday of each month held from January through March to a ?Mini Grand Prix Car Race? every February to a romantic Candlelight Posada during December, residents and visitors can find something of interest to do in the heart of this charming city. And minutes away are the quaint and colorful streets and shops of Mexico.
