Demographics

Situated in the middle of the state, Rutherford County?s idyllic location places it just 30 minutes southeast of the excitement of Nashville and right between Nashville and Chattanooga along Interstate 24. Historic Rutherford County will be forever linked to the Civil War. From Cannonsburg Village to Stones River National Battlefield to the Antebellum Sam Davis Home, the county is steeped in American history. It covers 619 square miles in middle Tennessee and has 182,023 residents. The seat of the county is Murfreesboro, which is considered the exact geographic center of Tennessee.

The largest employer in the county is Nissan North America, Inc., which supplies permanent jobs for 6,700 people and also employs 2,400 contract and onsite suppliers. The $2.1 billion dollar facility sprawls over 884 acres and takes up 5.4 million square feet. More than one-half million vehicles roll off its assembly lines every year, including the best-selling Altima model.

History and Culture

Cannonsburgh Village in nearby Murfreesboro is a reconstructed Southern village that serves as a living history museum of life during of the pioneers. The village features a cluster of buildings - a one-room schoolhouse, church, town hall, gristmill, and log home - that replicate early southern life. Cannonsburg was the original name for Murfreesboro. Other historical buildings include the 600-acre Stones River National Battlefield, a national park and cemetery, that is dedicated to those who lost their lives during the Civil War battle at that location; the 168-acre home and estate of Sam Davis; Oaklands Historic House Museum; Rutherford County Courthouse; and the Bradley Academy.

Recreation and Sports

Lush golf courses, parks, and lakes are plentiful in Rutherford County, and the popular 4- ½ mile Murfreesboro Greenway System offers a unique handicap-accessible trail system that borders Lytle Creek and the Stones River. Walkers, cyclists, in-line skaters, and joggers can be seen every day of the week along the trail. The system has a playground, restrooms, and a water fountain, and its trailhead locations include Manson Pike and Cannonsburgh Village.
