Demographics

With a population of 20,235, the picturesque country town of Lebanon is the seat of Wilson County and covers 29.2 square miles along the rolling hills of central Tennessee. This small, historic town is just minutes away from the excitement of Nashville. Several regional banks make their headquarters in Lebanon, which is considered a banking center. Incorporated in 1819, the municipality was named in reference to the abundance of cedar groves that can be seen throughout the terrain. Lebanon is the Biblical name for ?land of the cedars.? The city is also the birthplace of Cracker Barrel Old Country Store, Inc., which maintains its corporate headquarters there. Cumberland University, a four-year liberal institution, is also located in the town.

Dining, Entertainment, and Shopping

Lebanon is steeped in history. Five of Tennessee?s governors have resided in this quaint town ? Sam Houston, James Chamberlain Jones, William Bowen Campbell, Robert L. Caruthers, and Frank G. Clement. Lebanon?s charming historic downtown district is a tourist spot with restored buildings, gift stores, unique boutiques, antique shops, and restaurants. Not too far from the downtown area is the former residence of President Andrew Jackson, The Hermitage.

Recreation and Sports

Lebanon?s family-friendly fitness center is a popular meeting place that features a spacious gym, aerobics center, indoor track, two racquetball courts, and indoor and outdoor swimming pools. Scenic Cedars of Lebanon State Park provides over 900 acres outdoor recreational activities and a nature center and over 8,000 more acres of natural beauty that is maintained by the Parks Division and designated a state forest by the Forestry Division. Park amenities include playgrounds, lighted softball field and tennis courts, disc golf, volleyball court, and horseshoe pits. The Merritt Nature Center is located on park grounds and offers special programs and events including arts and crafts instructions, campfire evenings, movies, games, tours, hayrides, and geology and nature exhibits.

The Nashville Superspeedway, located in nearby Gladeville, is a motor racing complex boasting 7,500 cubic yards of concrete that draws crowds all year long. Built in 2000, the speedway is one of only three concrete tracks on the NASCAR circuit. The Superspeedway hosts four major races: two NASCAR Busch Series races, an Indy Racing League event, and a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race.

Nashville hosts several professional sports teams, most notably the NFL?s Tennessee Titans, who play at the Coliseum, and the NHL?s National Predators, who play at the Gaylord Entertainment Center.
