Demographics

With a population of 23,230, Gallatin is a quiet town in scenic Sumner County just minutes from the big-city excitement of Nashville. The seat of the county, the town prides itself on its small-town values. Named in honor of U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Albert Gallatin, this Middle Tennessee town is just 22 miles from Nashville International Airport and is home to Volunteer State Community College. This sleepy town was once headquarters to Dot Records, which was founded in 1950 but moved its headquarters to Hollywood, California in 1956 and became defunct in 1977. Dot?s roster of artists included Barbara Mandrell, Billy Vaughn, Pat Boone, Liberace, Lawrence Welk, Steve Allen, the Mills Brothers, and Andrews Sisters.

Dining, Entertainment, and Shopping

Gallatin?s quaint downtown historical district showcases some of the area?s finest architecture in an interesting mix of surrounding homes, office buildings, places of worship, retail shops, and eateries. From Trousdale Place, that was built in 1813 to the three-story Sumner County Museum to the oldest silent movie theater in the state, Palace Theater, visitors and residents can take a leisurely stroll around the city and enjoy a bit of Tennessee?s legendary past.

Art and Culture

Within Gallatin?s city limits, local arts and culture enthusiasts enjoy a variety of visual arts, theatrical, and musical performances presented by organizations such as the Sumner County Symphony, Volunteer State Toby?s, Lions Club Minstrel and community adult and children?s choirs.

Recreation and Sports

Gallatin is a sports-oriented community that offers four golf courses and a variety of recreational activities including soccer, football, baseball, basketball, tennis, and swimming. Its Middle Tennessee location provides an ideal setting for mountain biking, fishing, and hunting. Residents can enjoy the city?s new Skate Park and a state-of-the-art staking rink. Nearby Old Hickory Lake is a popular destination for camping, fishing, and outdoor sports. Residents and visitors can enjoy county-wide fishing tournaments and many events including the Middle Tennessee Strawberry Festival every May and the Rose Mont Renaissance in June.
