Florida is for Beach Lovers

Not only is Florida the fourth most-populous state in the U.S., its population grew 13.2% between April 1, 2000 and July 1, 2006, making it the fourth fastest growing state behind Nevada, Arizona and Georgia.  What attracts so many newcomers looking for new homes in Florida every day?  Job growth, no personal state income taxes and availability of affordable housing certainly factor into the equation.  But to many, Florida is simply one of the most beautiful states in the country (which also makes it one of the world’s top vacation destinations).

Florida Homes for Sale

Does your ideal vacation destination involve sun, surf and beautiful beaches?  Then why not search new homes for sale in Florida and live your dream lifestyle year-round?  Aptly called the Sunshine State, Florida is said to enjoy more than 300 days of sunshine a year, perfect weather for exploring the 1,350 miles of signature sand beaches along its coastline.  And here’s the best part…wherever you go in Florida, you’re never more than 60 miles away from the beach!  Whether you’re looking for a primary residence, vacation home, condo or luxury home, you’ll find plenty of Florida homes for sale that will meet your needs.  The toughest decision will be determining where to begin your search for Florida homes.  Here’s the skinny on some of the state’s top-rated beaches to help get you started.

Three Florida Beaches Score Top Ten Status with “Dr. Beach”

First, in case you haven’t heard of him, “Dr. Beach” (a.k.a. Dr. Stephen Leatherman) knows his beaches.  Since 1991, the Florida International University environmental studies professor and world-renowned, coastal expert has issued an annual top ten list of the best beaches in America.

When Dr. Beach released his 2007 rankings, three Florida beaches made his Top 10 Beaches list: (#2 - Caladesi Island State Park in Clearwater), (#9 - Lighthouse Point Park in Daytona Beach) and (#10 - Siesta Beach in Sarasota).

Caladesi Island is one of only a few completely natural islands along the Gulf Coast of Florida.  To enjoy its white sand shores, you’ll have to take a boat or ferry from Honeymoon Island State Park.  Besides swimming, sunning and beachcombing, visitors can fish, hike a three-mile nature trail or paddle a three-mile kayak trail through the mangroves and bay.  The park also offers picnic areas, bathhouses and a park concession.

In Ponce Inlet, a quaint town just south of Daytona Beach, you’ll find Lighthouse Point Park.  This unique, 52-acre park features a lighthouse that is historical monument, look-out point and museum, a popular fishing pier and pristine beaches.  On its nature trails, hikers may see raccoons, possum, skunks, armadillos, shore birds and birds of prey.

Located just offshore of the Sarasota mainland is an eight-mile-long barrier island called Siesta Key.  Its public beach, Siesta Beach, has earned several distinctions for the fine, white quality of its sand.  With its many amenities - tennis and volleyball courts, shaded playground and picnic area, concession stands, shallow water near shore and a lifeguard on-duty year-round - this beach is a popular destination for families.

Once a beach reaches the #1 spot on the list, the location is officially retired from the survey.  Five Florida beaches have earned this recognition since Dr. Beach first published his list:

  • Fort De Soto State Park, St. Petersburg (2005)
  • St. Joseph Peninsula State Park, Port St. Joe (2002)
  • St. Andrews State Recreation Area, Panama City (1995)
  • Grayton Beach Recreation Area, Santa Rosa Beach (1994)
  • Bahia Honda State Recreation Area, Florida Keys (1992)

With so many miles of shoreline and so many top-rated beaches, Florida is not only a great place to visit - it’s a great place to live.  Find new homes for sale near your favorite beach location and live the good life!
