Back to Design Basics

decor & more…

Hello Fellow Design Enthusiasts,

Those of you who read my first blog will know that I assist both home sellers who need to make their homes show their best and home buyers who want to create warm, inviting and beautiful spaces for everyday living.  In general, my entries will cover a variety of topics beginning with preparing your home for sale, moving to settling into a new home, then finishing up with decorating and personalizing your home.

Once a week, I will blog on decor & more - covering a bevy of interior decorating and design topics.  If I can help you through a design dilemma, or you’d just like to contribute your two cents on the topic of the day, please jump right in and comment!

The subject of my blog today is actually to introduce what I’ll be talking about until we cover the bases. Many of my clients have struggled with at least one aspect of design - with at least one room, that regardless of what they tried, they could not pull it together to their satisfaction. Something was throwing the room off, and they couldn’t put their finger on it. Not all of us are comfortable making design decisions. We are afraid to make mistakes in our interiors, which is a reasonable fear since mistakes can sometimes be costly. But much of this discomfort and lack of confidence comes down to not having a basic understanding of the design principles.

We all have our gifts and talents. I know I will never be a tax accountant (nor do I have any desire to be!). Yet with the right tools and some basic knowledge, I can do my own taxes (as I just demonstrated to myself). And so it is with design. If you have the desire to make your environment more comfortable and beautiful, then an understanding of the basic interior design principles can help you become much more comfortable and adept with design. I’m not saying you’ll be the world’s next Philippe Starke…but you just may be able to pull off a room that you’re pretty happy with. And that’s what it’s all about.

So let’s get back to the basics - some of the design “rules” and concepts that help define good design. Increase your knowledge, raise your level of confidence, experiment and put these principles into practice in your own home. You can do it!

Check back as we discuss scale, balance, flow, contrast, layering, color and more!
