Finding a New Home in the Right Neighborhood

What Should You Look For In a Neighborhood?

Some neighborhoods will be an immediate yes or no. You’ll  get the “Like it” or ”Not for me” vibe right away. The energy and quality of life will be visible everywhere - in the streets, buildings, parks, homes and yards.

A buyer’s agent (real estate professional working for you - not the seller) can fill you in on the community details - not so obvious at first glance.

  • Location of schools, markets, hospitals and libraries
  • Construction plans scheduled in the near future
  • Community services available
  • Home values - depreciated or appreciated in the neighborhood
  • Taxes and home owner’s insurance rates
  • Zoning regulations

It’s always prudent to walk around the neighborhood that interests you - get a first hand feel for what it’s really like.

Visit schools that your children would attend, so you can compare them to other schools in other neighborhoods you like. Chat with people that are around. Ask where the best stores are, what kind of recreational programs and activities are available near by. You want to know as much about the day-to day lifestyle as possible.

Obviously, the best source of real information is word of mouth from people who actually live in the neighborhood - not from someone trying to sell you on how great it is.

Take some notes to compare the pros and cons, as you begin to check out other areas of interest.

Thoroughly scoping out a neighborhood is just as important as inspecting the home you ultimately choose to buy. As the saying goes, “The best time to think about selling your home is when you’re buying it”.

Location will be one of the major factors that will influence home buyers if you decide to put it on the market down the road.

Do your homework and don’t cut corners in your search for the ultimate neighborhood. If you are planning to be in your new home for awhile, make sure it suits your lifestyle and feels right. If it doesn’t quite fit - keep on looking.
