Demographics and History

Home to almost 9,000 people, Quakertown was originally settled by members of the Society of Friends in the early 1700s. They called their community Great Swamp, but the name was officially changed to Quakertown in 1801. It was incorporated as a borough in 1855 and is today recognized as one of the most pleasant and charming places to live in Bucks County.

Economics

Like many towns in this part of Pennsylvania, Quakertown was originally farmland. Then the North Pennsylvania Railroad was built in the mid-19th Century, and population and industry began to flow into the area. Manufacturing was important throughout most of the 20th Century, as was self-sufficiency: Quakertown maintains its own sewer and water systems, and generated its own electrical power until 1969 (the borough still owns the distribution lines and resells power to other communities). Today tourism is important to the economy and many residents commute to jobs in Lehigh Valley.

Sports and Recreation

Quakertown residents have access to an excellent system of local parks, playgrounds, and recreational programs, and to Delaware Canal State Park, Ralph Stover State Park, and Nockamixon State Park as well. For professional sports entertainment, Philadelphia is about an hour away and offers the NFL?s Philadelphia Eagles, the NHL?s Philadelphia Flyers, and the NBA?s Philadelphia 76ers.

Arts and Culture

For artistic and cultural entertainment, Quakertown residents enjoy everything the Philadelphia area has to offer: The Institute of Contemporary Art, the Museum of American Art, The Philadelphia Orchestra, The Prince Music Theatre, Ortlieb?s Jazz Haus, The Pennsylvania Ballet, the Theatre of Living Arts, and the Keswick Theatre. The Township has its own interesting cultural attractions as well, including the July 4th Community Day Celebration and a host of historical homes.
