Demographics and History

Oxford is located in Chester County and home to almost 5,000 people. The town sits about 30 miles southeast of Lancaster, PA and about 60 miles southwest of Philadelphia. Colonial Settlers arrived in the area as early as 1682, and Oxford was split off from the then-growing Londonderry Township in 1754. It grew slowly, used mostly as a stopover point for travelers moving between Baltimore and Philadelphia, and was finally incorporated as a borough in 1838.

Economics

Agriculture is the primary economic factor in the Oxford area. Rich farmland is plentiful and there are many Amish who live here, which adds to the charm of the community. Tourism thrives in Oxford as well, both from people coming to visit ?Amish Country? and those looking for the town?s interesting architecture; between 1840 and 1880, many beautiful Carpenter Gothic, Queen Anne and Victorian style homes were built here. Many of these homes on Pine Street, Fourth Street, and Western Terrace are still in existence.

Sports and Recreation

Oxford residents have access to an excellent system of local parks and playgrounds, and to Susquehannock State Park and the Susquehanna River as well. For professional sports entertainment, Philadelphia is less than an hour away and offers the NFL?s Philadelphia Eagles, the NHL?s Philadelphia Flyers, and the NBA?s Philadelphia 76ers.
