Demographics and History

Media is the seat of government for Delaware County and home to about 5,500 people. It was incorporated as a borough on March 10, 1850 from Nether and Upper Providence Townships. Media takes its name from the Latin word for ?middle? because it is located in the geographic center of Delaware County.

Economics

Media remained largely farmland until the courthouse was erected in 1851, when the present commercial and residential districts grew up around the county offices. During the latter half of the 19th Century Media became a famous summer resort for well-to-do Philadelphians; several large vacation hotels were built, including the Idlewild, the Chestnut Grove House, and Brooke Hall. Though local businesses continue to thrive, today the town is largely a suburb of Philadelphia. Income levels and home values in Media are generally higher than the national average.

Sports and Recreation

Media residents have access to an excellent system of local parks and playgrounds, as well as the nearby Ridley Creek State Park. For professional sports entertainment, Philadelphia is less than 30 minutes away and offers the NFL?s Philadelphia Eagles, the NHL?s Philadelphia Flyers, and the NBA?s Philadelphia 76ers. Media is also the home of the Delaware County Institute of Science, one of the region?s premier science and technology attractions.
