About Lancaster PA

Lancaster, Pennsylvania is located in Lancaster County, in southeastern Pennsylvania and it's lifestyle is that of the Pennsylvania Dutch country. Lancaster was incorporated as a city in 1818. Lancaster is mainly a manufacturing and agricultural region. The settlement was laid out in 1730 and named for Lancaster, England. On September 27, 1777, during the American Revolution, Lancaster served as the national capital when the Continental Congress held a session here after fleeing from Philadelphia. From 1799 to 1812 it was the state capital. The U.S. president James Buchanan and the abolitionist leader Thaddeus Stevens both lived and died in Lancaster. Population 54,725 (1980); 55,551 (1990); 56,348 (2000); 54,779 (2006).

Lancaster Education and Points of Interest

Lancaster is the site of Franklin and Marshall College (1787), Lancaster Theological Seminary (1825), and Lancaster Bible College (1933). Points of interest include the Old City Hall (1795), the Fulton Opera House (1852), the North Museum and Planetarium, the Landis Valley Museum, and a farmers market.
