Demographics and History

Home to almost 8,000 people, Downingtown was originally known as Milltown because it was the location of the last mills on the edge of the then-unsettled western frontier. During the Revolutionary War the Downing Family rose to local prominence, and the name was officially changed to Downingtown after The War of 1812. This small but prosperous city has always enjoyed the benefits of being on the main transportation route between Philadelphia and Lancaster.

Economics

Commerce built Downingtown; first a stage coach line, then a railroad, and now highways connecting Philadelphia and Lancaster promote economic prosperity here. Part of the downtown area has also been designated a ?Keystone Opportunity Zone?, which offers tax breaks to employers and residents who do business or live in the area. Income levels and home values in Downingtown are both somewhat higher than the state average.

Sports and Recreation

Downingtown residents have access to an excellent system of local parks and playgrounds, and to Marsh Creek State Park and French Creek State Park as well. There are excellent trails, too; the Brandywine and Struble Trails both present area residents with access to wonderful hiking and biking areas. For professional sports entertainment, Philadelphia is less than an hour away and offers the NFL?s Philadelphia Eagles, the NHL?s Philadelphia Flyers, and the NBA?s Philadelphia 76ers.
