Demographics and History
Allentown is home to over 105,000 people and is one of three major cities ? along with Bethlehem and Easton ? that comprise the Lehigh Valley metro area. The city was first founded in 1762 but didn?t adopt the name ?Allentown? until 1838 (before that it was known as ?Northamptontown?). Allentown, along with the rest of the Lehigh Valley region, was one of the very first places in America to enter the industrial revolution.
Economics
Ironworks, railroads, and silk mills fueled the economic boom that Allentown experienced during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Now, as America switches over to a technology and service-driven economy, the city is taking steps to adapt: Officials are currently trying to attract business to the downtown district, touting infrastructure that offers state-the-art technology. A new fiber optic loop and uninterrupted electrical service are just some of the benefits new businesses will find in downtown Allentown.
Sports and Recreation
Allentown residents have access to an excellent system of local parks and playgrounds, including great fishing spots at Lehigh Creek, Cedar Creek, Jordan Creek and Trout Creek (the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission has given our waterways Class A and B rankings). Golfers will enjoy Allentown Municipal Golf Course, recently renovated and reopened to rave reviews. For professional sports entertainment, Philadelphia is less than an hour away and offers the NFL?s Philadelphia Eagles, the NHL?s Philadelphia Flyers, and the NBA?s Philadelphia 76ers.
Arts and Culture
For artistic and cultural entertainment, Allentown residents enjoy everything the Philadelphia area has to offer: The Institute of Contemporary Art, the Museum of American Art, The Philadelphia Orchestra, The Prince Music Theatre, Ortlieb?s Jazz Haus, The Pennsylvania Ballet, the Theatre of Living Arts, and the Keswick Theatre. The city has its own interesting cultural attractions as well, including the Allentown Art Museum, the Ballet Guild of Lehigh Valley, and the Civic Theater of Allentown.
