The Crystal River State Archaeological Site, started by the Indians of the Deptford culture, is considered one of the longest, continually occupied sites in Florida. For 1600 years, (200 BC - AD 1400) the 14-acre site was one of the most imposing prehistoric ceremonial centers on Florida's west coast. Crystal River is also famous for its fishing grounds as well as the diving and snorkeling opportunities.

Located eight miles south of Crystal River and nestled in heavy forest are the towns of Homosassa and Homosassa Springs. Settled in the early 19th century, Homosassa is one of the oldest residential communities to be found along Florida's Gulf Coast.
