Demographics

Star- and planet-gazing can be enjoyed at the Kitt Peak National Observatory located 56 miles southwest of Tucson. Situated at 6800 feet above sea level, this famous observatory is a state-of ?the-art research facility for our nation?s astronomers.

Education


Tucson residents are serious about their public educational system. Three separate districts offer a quality education to their students: Tucson Unified School District, Flowing Wells Unified School District, and Sunnyside Unified School District. These districts offer several, diverse curricula such as magnet programs, advanced placement programs, and special academic needs programs.

Higher level academic needs are fulfilled at Pima Community College and the University of Arizona. Pima Community College offers university transfer programs and occupational curricula on its six campuses. The University of Arizona educates approximately 34,000 students in their undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral level programs.

Golfing in Tucson

  • Silverbell Golf Course - Designed in 1979, this 18-hole, 6,300 yard golf course was built alone the Santa Cruz River. Featuring nine likes, open spacious fairways, and larger green sizes this course is a fun beginners course.
  • Randolph Golf Course - Currently the host of the PING/Welch?s LPGA Championship and was the course of the this 18-hole, 6,300 yard golf course was built alone the Santa Cruz River. Featuring nine likes, open spacious fairways, and P.G.A. Joe Garagiola Tucson Open. This course is the longest Tucson golf course measuring 7,000 yards from the black tees. Not only a very tough course featuring 5 water hazard holes and long fairways but one of beauty as well with many different views of the surrounding mountains.
  • El Rio Golf Course - Built in 1930s and was the original host of the Tucson Open. In 1968 the City of Tucson acquired it for public use. Tight fairways, and small greens make this short 6,400 yard course more challenging.
  • Dell Urich - Opened in the spring of 1996. This par 70 course measures 5,270 and 6,633 yards from the front and back tees, respectively. Dramatic elevation changes help keep the challenge in every shot.
  • Fred Enke - Opened in December 1983. Enke offers golfers a different approach to golf course design. The vast teeing areas, large greens, strategic bunkers and sand traps, and most important of all, its concept as a semi-arid, limited turf course. Grass is used only on the tees, ball landing area, and greens, with undisturbed native plants comprising the remainder of the landscaping. Multiple teeing options to choose from (6,800, 6,400, 5,800 and 5,000 yards). Due to the layout this course should be played cart assisted.

Recreation and Sports


The Tucson Parks and Recreation Department provides area residents with a wide selection of activities and amenities. The Department oversees 120 parks, 26 swimming pools, 5 municipal golf courses, 3 tennis centers, and 18 recreation centers.

The Aquatics Centers offer recreational and competitive swimming opportunities along with private and group instruction. Summertime Friday nights are reserved for teen pool parties and summer Saturday nights are reserved for family pool parties. The Tennis Centers feature 25 lighted tennis courts and 10 racquet ball courts. Leagues and tournaments are organized for competitive fun.

The municipal golf courses are home to lighted driving ranges, putting greens, full-service clubhouses, and group and private lesson instruction. A junior golf program for youngsters under the age of 18 provides hours of unlimited fun.

The Tucson Parks and Recreation Department maintains a top-notch creative arts center. A music studio with a piano laboratory and a dance studio are available. Residents can participate in dance, music, and drama in a fully-equipped auditorium.

Dining, Entertainment, and Shopping


Tucson presents a unique mélange of dining venues. From Mexican to Pacific Rim, Italian to Icelandic cuisine, this city does not lack in global dining spots. Wild west steakhouses are equally popular choices along side the proper Victorian tea houses. Piano bars, martini bars, cigar bars, and coffee bars are popular gathering spots as well.
