Interstates 10 and 17 intersect in the downtown Phoenix area and connect the capital city with Flagstaff to the north and Tucson to the south.

The county boasts several Wilderness areas: Superstition Wilderness, Four Peaks Wilderness, and Woolsey Peak Wilderness. Superstition Wilderness has 160,000 acres of incredible terrain and an extensive trail system some of which are extremely rugged and challenging. This wilderness area is part of the beautiful Tonto National Forest.

The Four Peaks Wilderness has 60,000 acres in the Mazatzal Mountain Range in northeastern Maricopa County. Horseshoe Dam and Reservoir on the Verde River offers water sports and recreation only 60 miles from Phoenix. The Woolsey Peak Wilderness area has 64,000 acres in southwest Maricopa County. Woolsey Peak rises 3,200 feet above sea level and is a significant geographic landmark in the state.
