About Green Valley, Arizona

Green Valley is a vibrant retirement community in Southwest Arizona. It is immediately south of the city of Sahuarita; about 25 miles south of Tucson and 41 miles north of Nogales AZ and the border of Mexico. Green Valley is a typical southwest desert area, with some stupendous mountain contrasts. It was called 'green valley' because of the 5000 acre pecan orchard that borders the area. When you drive west, uphill, you will be amazed by the contrast of the desert area, mountains, and green pecan trees.

The community is largely populated by people over the age of 55. According to the 2000 census, the population was 17,283. Some might call us 'senior citizens', but I prefer the terminology 'elders'. There are a few 'pockets' of families under the age of 55 and the family community of Sahuarita bordering Green Valley on the north. This age diversification, in the immediate area, allows the populace of Green Valley to enjoy all the amenities of a 'senior citizen community', with the added benefits of having a convenient pool of services and businesses.

Green Valley started as a planned community of Homeowner Organizations (HOA) and recreational facilities in the mid 1960's. You can read more about this in the history section of the website. Building continues in the area, to this day. It is an unincorporated community, which means there are no local taxes other than county taxes. These county taxes pay for many of our services, such as police, ambulance, and fire districts. Volunteerism has always been a major part of Green Valley, and many of the services available here are staffed and administered by volunteers. We take pride in this!
