Recreation and Sports
Few cities are located near so many incredible natural gifts. The Grand Canyon, Sunset Crater, Oak Creek Canyon, Meteor Crater, Walnut Canyon, Wupatki National Monument, and the San Francisco Peaks comprise the seven wonders and delight residents and visitors with their beauty and grandeur.
These wonders and countless others offer unlimited outdoor recreation. The scenic Oak Creek Canyon, a 16-mile long gorge exhibits vibrant colored cliffs in reds, whites, and yellows. Walnut Canyon National Monument, only seven miles east of Flagstaff, is a 400-foot-deep chasm showcasing some 300 pre-Colombian buildings precariously perched on ledges.
The Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument is approximately eight miles north of Flagstaff where a 1000-foot-high cinder cone appears from distant viewing to be mysteriously engulfed in flames at sunset.
Flagstaff maintains numerous city parks and organizes youth and adult softball, basketball, soccer, ice hockey, and volleyball leagues. Area youngsters enjoy the curves and ramps of the skateboard park and the challenges of the disc golf course.
Education
Education is a top priority for the city residents. The Flagstaff Unified School District operates 12 elementary, 4 middle, and 3 high schools. Highest student achievement and a quality, professional staff are important district goals.
Northern Arizona University, one of Arizona?s three state universities, has approximately 19,000 enrolled students on a campus of artfully restored sandstone buildings, which were constructed in the late 1800s. Coconino County Community College offers continuing education courses, associate degrees, and technical and business certificates.
Art and Culture
Flagstaff offers an array of artistic and cultural diversions. The Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra provides world-class entertainment from September through April in the 1500-seat Ardrey Auditorium on the NAU campus. The Orchestra also features a delightful Young People?s Concert for students in the Flagstaff Unified School District.
The Arboretum at Flagstaff displays stunning formal and informal gardens with meandering walks and trails. Wander through 200 acres of butterfly gardens, wildflower meadows, and shade gardens. The Lowell Observatory is another popular destination for Flagstaff residents and visitors. A U.S. Naval Observatory station and a planetary mapping facility, this celestial lookout was founded in 1894 and is responsible for the specific new discoveries about the planet Mars and the discovery, in 1930, of the ninth planet, Pluto. View the constellations from one of seven enormous telescopes and count your lucky stars.
