The Chiricahua Mountain range is Cochise County is an inactive volcanic range approximately 20 miles wide and 40 miles long. This stunning geological wilderness was formed 27 million years ago by erupting volcanoes and has left fascinating rock formations, spires, and pinnacles. The Chiricahua National Monument is a paradise for birders and hikers with 17 miles of maintained trails. It is not uncommon to see mountain lions, bears, and javelinas while in the park.

Kartchner Caverns State Park, in the Whetstone Mountains, offers campgrounds, hiking trails, and a bird sanctuary. Underneath the mountains are nearly seven acres of cave systems and rooms. Kubla Khan is the second-longest soda straw formation in the world at 54 feet and the longest in Arizona. The cave system is open for guided tours and has numerous fossil remains from the Pleistocene period and other unusual cave formations.
