In 1997, Mobile ranked 74th in the "Best 100 Places to Live" and 11th in Time Magazine's "Where the Jobs Are" survey. Mobile is a major trade center and port of the Southeastern US. Residents enjoy easy access to the beaches and parks of Mobile Bay and the Gulf of Mexico: Meaher State Park, Gulf State Park, and Gulf Islands National Seashore. These parks offer swimming, sunbathing, camping, hiking, biking, and a host of other activities. Azalea City Golf Course, recognized by Golf Digest as being one of the top public courses in the nation, has generous tree-lined fairways, well-manicured greens, and panoramic views of the lake. Wildland Expeditions offers area residents an opportunity to visit the heart of the swamp and Mobile Bay Estuary, home to more than 250 species of birds and 230 species of fish and wildlife, including alligators, black bears, bald eagles, and osprey. Mobile has plenty for those who love culture as well. The 95,000 sq. ft. Mobile Museum of Art is the largest art museum on the Gulf Coast and the Eastern Shore Art Center provides gallery space for local and international artists. Historical attractions abound as well. The Belligrath Gardens and Home, the Fort Gaines Historic Sites, and the Oakleigh Historic Complex all offer a look into Alabama's unique past. Mobile also has some interesting festivals such as the Mobile International Festival which transforms the Mobile Convention Center into an international celebration of food, art, song, and dance.
